Delhi has a history that dates back to the Vedic times. It is believed that “Indrapastha” which has been mentioned in the greatest Indian epic, Mahabharata is the present day Delhi. The city which has been a capital since the Mahabharata times became capital during various instances in its history. The first instance in India’s recorded history was during the period of Mughal rule. After the Mughals moved their capital from Agra in 1658, Agra was established as their capital. Almost three centuries later, the British transferred their capital from Calcutta to Delhi. All these rulers and all these dynasties from the Aybaks to Sayyeds to the Lodhis, have contributed in some way or the other in creating a unique identity for the city. Architectural wonders like the Qutab Minar stand testimony to the extraordinary vision of the architects in those times. There are other ancient structures worth taking a note: The Humayun’s tomb, Red fort and the Jantar mantar. These and many other forts and monuments located in different parts of the city takes you back for a rendezvous with the city’s glorious past.
